The Roundhouse Café // Journey of Coffee Mural

2021

The Roundhouse is a place where community can come together, tell stories, learn more of the world we live in, eat good food, and support each other as we journey through life. A vibrant mural was needed to refresh the café space and incorporate the organisation's zero waste ethos.

My roles in this project: Designer, Writer, Painter

At the start of this project, I met with staff at The Roundhouse to discuss their vision for the space and what they were looking for from the mural. A key theme for them was sustainability, and they wanted the mural to be relevant to the café. I decided to use the space to show the journey coffee goes on from bean to cup. My hope was that this would encourage consumers to think more about the time, energy and resources that go into the products they enjoy, tying into the zero waste ethos of The Roundhouse.

Some of the café’s interior walls and doors were already painted, which helped me decide on the colour scheme of the piece early on. Once I’d seen the space and had the measurements of the walls, I came up with my initial sketches which progressed on to the final concept.

The larger wall presented a bit of a challenge as the right end is curved. I used this unusual feature to create a separate “Zero Waste Corner”, which features tips on how to reduce waste. There are blank spaces left on the wall for people to contribute their own ideas.
